One Step at a Time

SAMUEL SHENOVA

This morning I was walking up the subway steps and I could hear the train coming. Ahead of me was an older man, tall, grey hair, wearing thick black sunglasses that were too big for his head. He was clunking a heavy black suitcase behind him as morning commuters started to rush by. He was going to miss the train. He was going to miss the next two trains at the rate he was going.

I came up behind him and asked, "Do you need help?"

He looked over his shoulder and smiled, "No thanks, I'm okay. One step at a time."

When I got to the platform, the train had already left. The next one came about two minutes later. I looked down the platform and saw the old man reaching the top of the stairs. He made it. He caught the train, one step at a time.
